Wilton Water & Wastewater

The City of Wilton provides water, sewer and garbage service. Meters are read around the 15th of each month. Water and sewer are billed based on the total gallons used. At this time garbage is $23.00 each month for curbside pickup.

The City requires a deposit of $100 for water service (an additional $200 deposit is required for electric service). The deposit is refunded after 2 years if all the bills have been paid by the 20th, unless the customer moves before that time. Wilton City Hall Office hours are 8:00 AM-4:00 PM.

Bills are sent out at first of each month and are due by the 20th of the month. If the bill is not paid within 12 days of the due date, the customer will be posted and assessed a $40 posting fee. If other arrangements are needed to pay the bill, please inquire at City Hall or Wilton Municipal. The City has a drop box for payments after normal working hours of Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:00pm. The drop box is located at the bottom of the main entry steps. The City also offers ACH for no fee or debit/credit (with a service fee) options for payment of your utility bill.

LEAD AND COPPER SERVICE LINE NOTIFICATIONS 2024
Residents of Wilton have begun receiving notifications for lead and copper water service lines. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IADNR) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed policies under the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) and the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) to protect the communities that are provided with public water supplies. Under this rule Wilton is tasked with identifying each service connection that is supplied through the City of Wilton distribution system.

The notification letters have been sent to each resident in Wilton per the LCRR. Notifications are required until each service line has been identified. If you are unsure what material your water service consists of there are a few methods of identification that can be performed.

A visual inspection of the pipe. The section of pipe that needs to be identified is the portion of pipe typically coming up from the basement floor going into the water meter before it supplies the house with water. There is a provided visual at the bottom displaying each service line material used in homes.
A scratch test can be performed. Lead piping will scratch easily and will show a shiny silver color. Copper piping will display a shiny orange color when scratched. Galvanized steel is not easily scratched but can be identified by other means. Plastic will be a soft material that is easily scratched but does not display metallic qualities. Plastic typically comes in white, red, blue, and black coloring.
A magnet test can also indicate what the pipe material consists of. A magnet will only connect to galvanized steel pipe, and it will not connect to lead, copper, or plastic.

A federal lead service line ban was enacted in 1986 under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). If your home or residence was built after 1986 it will contain copper or plastic water service lines. Homes or residents built prior to 1986 should perform each means of inspection to identify your service material and report the material to Wilton City Hall. Contact information is at the end of the document.

If you require assistance in identifying your service material or have questions regarding lead and copper service lines, please contact Wilton City Hall: 563-732-2115

If you know or identify your service material, you can call Wilton City Hall or email city staff with the material and your address will get updated in our records.
